Visual Kei April 2026: Month in Review

April 2026 Month in Review: Reunions, Supergroups & the Sound of Tomorrow

April was the month Visual Kei stopped playing it safe—legends returned, new blood arrived, and the underground roared louder than ever.

Legends Return, New Era Begins

The month's heartbeat was unmistakably nostalgic yet forward-looking. DIR EN GREY unleashed MORTAL DOWNER, their most ambitious statement yet, with two separate reviews cementing it as a masterwork of controlled chaos. The Tower Records Cafe collaboration and Nico Nico livestream special showed how the veterans continue to dominate the cultural conversation. Meanwhile, AREGE returned after 26 years with a stunning new music video for "Monochrome"—proof that some bands' mystique only deepens with time. And in perhaps April's most electrifying moment, SCISSOR made a surprise reunion announcement after two decades away, with streaming debuts and May live dates already locked in.

The Supergroup Explosion

April was the month of bold new collectives. YUKI from ex-Raphael formed "Solid Statement Soul", while Fatüm launched a special unit pairing SUI and HIDE-ZOU. AIKOKU BARRACUDA emerged as a fresh supergroup with a June debut live already scheduled, and Erzsébet Project formed bringing gothic elegance with Monet and KD. KYMM united vistlip's Yuh with an ex-MELVEL vocalist, while OLD CIRCUS assembled seasoned underground veterans for an August EP drop. These weren't vanity projects—they were carefully curated power moves that signaled serious creative ambition.

New Releases & Fresh Energy

fulusu delivered "Birth in Vitro", The Ravens released "BAND-AID" with exclusive tour merch, and LAST ALLIANCE unveiled their 8th album "divine". KIRITO launched "THE SHIFT COMPLETE" tour with a bold new sound direction, while lynch. announced "CLIMAX" and a national tour following their celebrated 20th anniversary. Emerging acts stole hearts too: unRealless teased their debut EP "NETWORK SYNDROME" arriving in May, PARAMENA dropped their djent-inflected debut digital EP "APEIRON EP", and THE MAYDAY MAYDAY prepared a free live-limited CD that captured the underground's scrappy spirit.

Tours & International Expansion

MUCC expanded their European footprint with Berlin & Helsinki dates, while KAMIJO announced eight European cities for September. Kaya & Schwarz Stein made their triumphant return to European stages after 14 years, and SUI launched a Latin America acoustic solo tour. The international Visual Kei conversation has never been louder.
